Senior lecturer, public relations
I began teaching PR at Texas State University in Fall 2005, where I strive to bring real-world experience to the classroom. I teach four classes a semester including:
- MC 3343 -- Introduction to public relations: This introductory course is an overview of public relations. The class ranges from 50-70 students, both majors and non-majors. In addition to learning about PR, students complete a public relations plan for a real organization.
- MC 3379 -- Advertising and PR management: Students study trends and issues in advertising and public relations. Students develop a communications campaign for a real client.
- MC 4313 -- Writing for public relations: Students practice various types of PR writing, including position papers, press releases, pitches and newsletters. Students develop a media kit for a real client.
- MC 4320 -- Public relations campaigns: This is the capstone class in the PR sequence. Students are divided into teams, with each team developing and implementing a PR program for a client. Additionally, students build their analytical skills by reviewing other PR campaigns.
In addition to teaching, I am co-advisor of the PRSSA chapter and help coordinate special events for the department, including Mass Comm Week and Women in Media Work.
